Khotan (also spelled Hotian, or Hetian) is the name of a major oasis and city on the ancient Silk Road (present day Xinjiang, China), a trade network that connected Europe, India, and China across the vast desert regions of central Asia beginning more than 2,000 years ago.

The Khotan carpets combine Chinese details with Central Asian design schemes and Western vivid coloring, except where recent dyes have reduced their effect to pastels.

What makes them so appealing is their versatility: they could easily function in both contemporary and traditional interiors alike. This carpet was made by the Hazara tribe from Northern Afghanistan using vegetable dyes. This carpet was made by the Hazara tribe from Northern Afghanistan using vegetable dyes.
Khotan rugs tend to be long and somewhat narrow with an unmistakable glossy finish, from either wool or silk woven with asymmetrical knots. Commonly integrated into antique khotan rugs were grand medallions, ornate borders and depictions of pomegranates.

Today, Khotan is referred to as an oasis of weaving because no other region in history blended varied perspectives and practices with such dexterity. Khotan rugs age beautifully owing to this timeless artistry and elegantly fit within an array of settings from sophisticated to eclectic.
