The name “chobi” is Farsi and literally translates to “color like wood”. This name was probably chosen due to the most common dye colors used in these rugs being of shades that can be found in different types of wood.

The word Ziegler stems from a story. In the late 1800s, rumor has it that a German company named Ziegler & Co. commissioned a team of European and Iranian designers to come up with a soft, aesthetically pleasing new design that was more delicate in design and neutral in color than the bold patterns used in most Oriental rugs at the time. The rugs were hand-knotted in Iran and destined for Western consumers. This particular fusion created the original Ziegler rugs, which likewise became a hot commodity among the international market. Since the Western market had such a deep hand in the Ziegler's manifestation, the overall process had an extremely positive impact on the Persian and Oriental rug exportation industry.

Chobi Ziegler rugs are no longer exclusively created by Ziegler & Co., of course. You’ll find them made across Iran and neighboring countries; this one is made by the Turkmen tribe, mostly women weavers, in North Afghanistan. An authentic Chobi Ziegler rug – like any authentic Oriental carpet – is created and woven completely by hand.  This is one of the many reasons why Persian rugs are considered the world’s most gorgeous, durable, and prized of all hand-knotted rugs.
