Vintage Central African Fang mask

The mask was meant to depict a terrifying entity, and it was used in ceremonies that involved spectacular dances. The ceremonies mainly consisted of frightening those who had evil intentions.

The understated beauty of this mask can give the impression of serenity but the deliberate anatomical distortions is consistent with the need to personify a terrifying, semi-human being.

This is a vintage reproduction mask from Cameroon.  It has a small crack on the inside chin - this is due to age and temperature fluctuation.
